THE VILLAGES
OF THE CITY OF LARUNS

EWE-MILK CHEESE OF THE OSSAU VALLEY Geography, history and tourism:

There is a total of nine small villages within the canton of Laruns. Pon is totaly integrated to Laruns, while Espalungue is attached to it. Geteu and Gêtre are downstream in the valley while Eaux Chaudes, Goust, Miegebat, Gabas and Artouste-Fabrèges are located upstream a few miles away in the mountain.

The most typical of all are Pon with its old houses and their decorated lintels, Espalungue and its castle who once belonged to Aramis.

Eaux Chaudes with its hydropathic establishment that was in the past popular with the Maison d'Albret and Montaigne (see our page about thermalism), Gabas the village of traditional Ossau cheese, with its salt tubs and its old chapel on the route to Compostelle.

Artouste-Fabrèges: ski resorts designed to nicely integrate the sceenery.
(see the page winter leisures). Its skiing domain is surrounded by spectacular sites in front of the Pic du Midi d'Ossau.

The touristic train of Artouste (altitude 2000 m), built in 1924, allows tourists to discover an exceptional panorama up to the lake of Artouste.
During summer, it is possible to combine the journey in the train and a ride via the "col de l'Ours" to the Soussoueou valley using a chair lift.
